Tips on hiring a remodeling contractor

It is very important to follow a few simple rules when hiring a contractor.  Please make sure you protect yourself financially.  A successful project is possible and the foundation is laid during the hiring process.  Here are some tips to follow when hiring your contractor.

Browse the internet

Do local searches for contractors in your area.  You can find out a lot about remodeling contractors through online reviews, websites, and directories.  Look for contractors that appear to have experience in the type of work you would like to have done.  Social media may be another place you can really find some quality contractors.  If they have social media pages you can see how they interact with people, many of whom they have worked for.

Narrow down your choices

As you browse the internet doing local searches compile a list of contractors you would like to consider.  Start with 3-5 choices and do a little more research on each one to see if you can find out more information.  Once you have a solid list then you can start to schedule interviews and consultations.

Set up interviews and consultations

A face to face interview with a contractor can give you a great feel for whether or not you want to work with them.  Many projects will require a lot of interaction so having someone you feel comfortable asking tough questions is important.  It is important to find our how their company is structured.  Here are some questions to consider:

  • Who will be our contact person when we have questions or concerns?
  • What does the fee schedule look like?
  • What certifications do they have?
  • What is their current work load?
  • When can they start?
  • What happens if they cannot complete the project for some reason?
  • Are they insured?

Get estimates on time & cost

Make sure when they leave the interview there is an understanding that they will be giving you an estimate of time and cost.  Be sure to set date when it can be expected as this can be a great sign of whether or not the contractor can be trusted to make deadlines.

Request and call references

After the interviews then rank your preferred contractors and begin to call their references. If you are not satisfied with the references you receive from your first choice then move down the list and continue to call until you are satisfied.
